Youth Programming

Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) has year-round youth programming, divided up into two different programs:

  1. Summer Youth Organizing Fellowship
  2. Youth Action Team

The Summer Youth Organizing Fellowship is geared towards high school students between 14 to 18 years old and who are interested in social justice. This is a two month long paid learning experience incorporating gender justice, civic and community engagement, and grassroots organizing. Youth get the chance to build relationships with their community and their cohort through field trips and team bonding.

2019 Summer Youth Fellow Pa talks about her leadership project that focuses on queer Asian folks.

Past Summer Youth Fellows have learned from guest facilitators like Tori during the Writing Our Own Love Letters workshop, visited community sites like Urban Roots, and developed their own leadership projects.

The Youth Action Team runs during the school year and invites a small cohort of high school aged youth to continue to develop their leadership, facilitation, and advocacy skills. They get the chance to develop their issues organizing skills, learn participatory action research, join coalitions, advocate for bills and policies, and learn grant making.

YAT exists as a space for youth to explore socially conscious topics and lead projects relating to their topics of interest. The aim is for youth to dive deeper into topics broadly discussed about during the Summer Youth Organizing Fellowship and to create action-oriented projects.
