During the summer of 2020, there was a participatory action research project conducted by the summer Gender Justice cohort about the gaps in sex education. They researched sex-ed curriculum state requirements and had participants from the community engage in interviews, in which they asked the participants questions about their experiences with receiving sex ed in and outside of school. The research reported many findings, and some of the key takeaways from the research projects were:
- Schools in Minnesota have very different curriculum regarding sex-ed, and they are only required to provide HIV education and abstinence.
- APIDA participants noted that there was little to no education regarding consent, healthy relationships, and how to prevent STI/STDS.
- Sex-ed in school did not talk about race, culture, or LGBTQIA+ identities and experiences. Additionally, language barriers were an issue both in and outside of school when it came to sex education and conversations surrounding the topics of sex between students and sex educators.
So from those results and findings, it just further proved how we not only need a more sex-positive, comprehensive, and queer-inclusive sex education, but also one that APIDA youth and people can relate to and understand.
So to continue the work of the summer research projects, 2021 Gender Justice Interns Anne and Savanna created this small series to start to address some of the gaps in sex ed. By having important conversations around sex and relationships, that are by and for APIDA youth, AAOP hopes to continue de-stigmatize sex, sexuality, and pleasure in our community.
